Do Marker Balls Work With Your Locator? The Compatibility Matrix
Figure 1. A standard EMS locator reads a passive marker ball by frequency — brand of locator does not matter, only the frequency does.Compatibility Is About Frequency, Not Brand
A passive marker ball is a tuned resonant circuit. Your locator transmits a frequency; the ball tuned to that frequency answers. The industry standardized these frequencies decades ago — which means a properly tuned third-party marker is detected by the same locator you already own, whether it says 3M, Radiodetection, TEMPO, or anything else on the side.
A marker ball does not “belong” to the locator brand that made it. It belongs to a frequency. Match the frequency, and any compatible locator can find it.
That is also why the Mocbo MB22 is a genuine 3M Dynatel–compatible alternative: it speaks the same EMS language as the Dynatel unit already in your truck.
The Marker Ball Locator Compatibility Matrix
The MB22 ships primarily at 101.4 kHz (the dominant telephone/communication band, orange APWA), with the full standard EMS frequency set available. Any locator that has a 101.4 kHz (or matching band) ball-marker detection mode will read it. Representative families:
| Locator family | Reads Mocbo MB22? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 3M Dynatel (2500 / 2573 / 2200 series) | Yes | The MB22’s reference receiver in our in-house test report — fully verified. |
| Radiodetection (RD8100 / RD8200 + EMS mode) | Yes | Reads standard EMS ball frequencies including 101.4 kHz. |
| TEMPO (OmniMarker II / former 3M line) | Yes | Same EMS frequency plan as the 3M legacy line. |
| Certus | Yes | EMS ball-marker mode covers standard bands. |
| Vivax | Yes | Ball/sonde mode reads 101.4 kHz markers. |
| Subsite | Yes | Standard EMS detection frequencies supported. |
| Schonstedt (GA-92 / EMS) | Yes | Reads passive EMS balls at standard bands. |
| Ditch Witch | Yes | EMS-compatible marker detection. |
| Leica / other EMS locators | Yes | Any unit with a 101.4 kHz ball mode reads the MB22. |
The pattern is simple: if your locator has a ball-marker or EMS mode at 101.4 kHz (or the band you ordered), it reads the MB22. No proprietary handshake, no pairing, no firmware unlock
How to Confirm Your Specific Model
A “family” answer is a strong starting point, but your exact model's frequency list is the source of truth. Three quick checks:
- Open the locator’s frequency/band list — look for “101.4 kHz” or “ball marker / EMS” mode.
- Bury one test ball on a known line at a realistic depth.
- Sweep with your own unit — confirm signal strength and depth against the spec.
This is the same no-risk validation we recommend in our installation guide: a small batch, a known line, five minutes of sweeping. If your crew reads it, you are done — no equipment change required.
The One Exception: iD / Programmable Markers
Everything above describes passive, non-ID markers — the high-volume workhorse (and what the MB22 is). If you need a marker that stores asset data on a chip (serial, owner notes, GPS tag), that is an iD / RFID programmable marker. Those require a locator or reader that can decode the stored data, and compatibility there is reader-specific.
Passive MB22 = reads on any standard EMS locator. iD markers = need an iD-capable reader. Pick passive for universal compatibility; pick iD only when you must carry data on the marker itself.
Why We Are Confident: Verified In-House
Mocbo does not just claim compatibility — we test it. The MB22 was validated in our in-house R&D lab against a 3M Dynatel 2573 reference receiver (Test Report P12-21-026-01): frequency within ±2.5 kHz, readable to 1.5 m burial depth, passing IEC environmental and mechanical standards. That test is exactly what lets us tell distributors: it will read on the locator your customer already owns. The same compatibility is what helped our German partner win the Deutsche Telekom deployment — DT crews located Mocbo balls on their existing 3M equipment.
Who Benefits Most
- Distributors wanting a second source or private-label EMS line that drops into customers’ existing locator fleets.
- Fiber & 5G contractors standardizing on 101.4 kHz telephone markers.
- Municipalities / 811 programs buying in volume and unwilling to force a locator swap.
- OEM / private-label buyers needing a certified, compatible supply partner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a MB22 read on my 3M Dynatel locator?
Yes. The MB22 is tuned to standard EMS frequencies (including 101.4 kHz telephone) and was verified against a 3M Dynatel 2573 reference receiver in our in-house test report — it reads on Dynatel and compatible locators.
Do I need to buy a special locator to use marker balls?
No. Any standard EMS locator with a matching frequency or ball-marker mode (3M Dynatel, Radiodetection, TEMPO, Certus, Vivax, and most others) will read it. You keep the equipment you already own.
Are marker balls brand-locked to the maker’s locator?
No. EMS marker frequencies are standardized across the industry. Compatibility depends on frequency, not brand — a properly tuned third-party ball reads on any compatible locator.
What if my locator is an iD / RFID reader?
The passive MB22 reads on any standard EMS locator, but it does not store on-marker data. If you need asset data stored on the marker, choose an iD/programmable marker and pair it with an iD-capable reader.
About Mocbo
Mocbo manufactures passive EMS marker balls (MB22) — water/glycol-filled, self-levelling, IP68-sealed, ~50-year design life — from an ISO 9001 / 45001 / 14001 certified factory, validated by an in-house R&D lab (Test Report P12-21-026-01) and trusted in telecom deployments including Deutsche Telekom.
